Participation Rate
In an IUL policy, the percentage of the index gain that is used to calculate the interest credited to the policy's cash value.
Understanding Participation Rate
If a policy has a 80% participation rate and the index gains 10%, the credited interest would be 8% (before any cap applies). Some IUL products use participation rates as an alternative to or in addition to cap rates. A policy with 100% participation and a 12% cap will outperform a policy with 80% participation and no cap when index gains are below 12%.
Why This Matters for Retirement: Understanding Participation Rate is essential for making informed decisions about tax-free retirement income strategies. Whether you are evaluating an IUL policy, planning Roth conversions, or comparing retirement vehicles, this concept directly affects your outcomes.
